The Spotty Story

Our journey began with a simple spotty bag, but it grew into something much more profound - a symbol of safety, unity, and joy in the face of life-altering challenges.

Life has a way of throwing curveballs when you least expect them. For our family, it came in the form of severe food allergies and celiac disease. Suddenly, our kitchen - once a place of warmth and togetherness - became a complex maze of potential dangers. We found ourselves navigating a world where a simple breakfast could turn into a stressful ordeal. Juggling different types of bread, remembering which chopping board was safe for whom, and constantly being on high alert was exhausting. The standard colour-coding systems for kitchen tools didn't work for us; green for "bread" didn't account for the nuts, milk, or eggs that could be present in gluten-free alternatives.

A Family's Unexpected Journey

The Birth of an Idea

It was during a particularly hectic morning that Louisa, our mother and the heart of our household, had an epiphany. She'd recently bought a spotty bag, and as she watched us scramble to locate EpiPens before heading out, she realised we needed something instantly recognisable—a pattern that could cut through the chaos. "What if we had a system that was both functional and beautiful?" That simple spotty bag became our beacon of hope. No more frantic searches or confusing shouts in moments of crisis. "Grab the spotty bag!" became our rallying cry, clear and unmistakable.

From Necessity to Identity

The spots didn't stop at the bag. They made their way into our kitchen, transforming our space from a place of anxiety to one of empowerment. Each spotty item - be it a chopping board, mug, tea towel, or apron—became a silent guardian, easily identifiable even to visiting friends and family. But something magical happened along the way. What started as a safety measure blossomed into a symbol of unity and strength. For our younger family members, we imbued the spots with special meaning: each one represented someone in their support network - a loved one, a friend, a person who made them feel safe. Suddenly, these spotty items weren't just tools; they were reminders that even in the face of dietary restrictions, we were part of something bigger. We weren't isolated; we were surrounded by love and support.

A Rainbow of Support

As our spotty revolution grew, so did its palette. Each family member chose a colour close to their heart:

  • Blue for Dad's steadfast presence

  • Yellow for Mom's sunny optimism

  • Pink for Rosie's vibrant spirit

  • Purple for Bel's creative flair

  • And green, a colour we all cherished, symbolizing growth and hope

These colours weren't just preferences; they were extensions of our personalities, bringing life and individuality to our safety system.

Looking to the Future

While our journey began with a spotty bag - a product we're actively developing and hope to offer soon - the concept has flourished in our kitchen products. Our chopping boards, mugs, tea towels, and aprons are just the beginning. We dream of a future where everyone can find their perfect spotty match, whether it's to complement their kitchen decor or to represent their unique journey.

More Than Just Spots

Our spotty story is more than just about spots on products. It's a tale of a family's resilience, creativity, and love. It's about turning challenges into opportunities and finding beauty in the unexpected. When you choose a De-ency product, you're not just buying a kitchen tool. You're becoming part of a larger story - a community of individuals who refuse to let dietary restrictions dim their joy of cooking and sharing meals. Every spot is a reminder: You are seen. You are safe. You are part of something beautiful. Join us in our spotty revolution. Let's transform kitchens - and lives - together, one spot at a time.
